Persist or Let Go?

Winston Churchill said, "Never, ever, ever give up." And we are flooded with examples of people who have overcome obstacles, holding firmly to their dreams and achieved the impossible!

While I do believe persistence is a trait that can produce results ... I also see people who are very discouraged and holding to a dream they are no longer committed to. They beat themselves up and believe for THEM it is IMPOSSIBLE. In fact, they are in a place where the knowing when to let go would be a better skill than resistance. I've heard it said that "Beating your head against a wall will probably give you a concussion before making a hole in the wall".

When should you persist?

  • If you are absolutely passionate about the vision.
  • If you area person who has a strong will and you LIKE a challenge.
  • If dire consequences could result if you don't achieve this goal.
  • If achievement is one of your values .
  • If doing so empowers you!

The last one is really the most important measure. When a goal no longer is pulling you forward, but is a weight on your shoulders  ...it's time to re-evaluate. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying give it up immediately. I am saying you want to see what is missing and ask yourself if you are still committed to the OUTCOME. This is important. Most people ask themselves if it is doable and make a judgment based on, so far, it isn't working. It is a completely different question to examine, your values, motivators, and commitment and THEN determine if you want to persist. With those three things in alignment, you'll get creative, think in new ways and draw unexpected energy to you.

What are the signs you should let go?

  • It's not your goal, it's a "should" or someone else's expectation of you.
  • When you are beating yourself up instead of motivating yourself.
  • When your situation has changed and it is no longer what you really want.
  • When it is not in alignment with your values .

I would rather see you let go of the goals that you aren't passionate about and focus just on one or two than to hold goals that weigh you down and deflate your self-confidence. We all know it isn't necessarily the SMARTEST agents that are the most successful, it is the ones that are enthusiastic and driven because their goals are allowing them to be the best that they can be. They are using their values, strengths and unique qualities to reach their goals!!!!!

So, look at those goals: Persist or Let Go??????
